new personal best - painting at 12 services

In an effort to help Resurrection Catholic Church begin its own arts ministry, I volunteered to act as a consultant and resident artist. I began painting there on April 5th, Palm Sunday, and have missed only a couple of Sundays since. I put the count at 12 times that I've painted during the mass there. During that time I completed 9 pieces. Needless to say, I'm a little tired and need a rest. Anyone want a turn at Resurrection?

I got quite a few questions regarding the faces. "Is the painting done?" Was the primary question. Yes, the painting is finished. I purposely made the faces blank. First, we dont know how Mary looked exactly. Second, I think its important that the view be allowed to project the faces and features of this piece. Each of us will have a different picture in our mind of Mary. Also, if the faces are blank, it allows the painting to have more expression. You can see what you need to see. Do you need comfort? Then maybe her expression is compassionate to you.

Staff at the Resurrection Catholic Church recorded me working on a 3'x4' painting of the Mary and child. I think they couldn't record the sound so they add music to it later. Pretty neat.

Live painting done for Holy Week

“The Light Shines in the Darkness,” painted at Resurrection Catholic Church, 2009 © Richard Fudge

General idea for the piece is from following scripture:

John 14:6 – Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

John 1:4-5 –In him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.

While reflecting on this scripture and the crucifixion, I felt inspired to visually illustrate Jesus being the Light. Sort of like there is light releasing from Him into darkness. I painted the left panel Palm Sunday, the right panel on Good Friday, and the middle panel on Easter. At each service, I started with a blank canvas with just a pencil sketch on it. I was able to complete each painting by the end of the mass (about 1 and a half hours). I sold the painting almost before the paint was dry. So I'm planning to have prints made. It's very exciting.

I find it slightly funny that I just painted a palm for Palm Sunday. I'm going to paint the other hand on Good Friday and then the feet on Easter.

My largest live woship painting project to date

I'm going to work on this Palm Sunday at 10:30am, Good Friday (i dont know the time) and Easter Sunday at 10:30am during the mass at Resurrection Catholic Church. I will be there for the rest of the month of April if they will have me. These canvases are each 36"x36" or 3ft x 3ft. That's 9 square feet a piece and a total of 27 square feet. So I know there will be some additional touch up work.

Live painting at Resurrection Catholic Church

I've been asked to paint live at Resurrection Catholic Church here in Memphis. Certainly not the type of church service that I'd thought I'd be painting at next. To me, it feels like a very traditional service for live art. But Catholic churches are typically full of art and understand art's role in enriching the worship experience. It seemed like most of my art history courses spent the majority of the time discussing art done for or in the Catholic Church.

I'm so excited to work with another church to add art to it's worship service ( or in this case, it's mass ). Sharing my experience with another church has been a prayer of mine for the last two years. The Stirring arts ministry has grown so much that it feels poised to mentor and help other churches.
